Live Streaming Suicide by French Teen Leads to Inquiry

French authorities have opened an investigation after a teenager allegedly live-streamed video of her suicide on the popular app Periscope. The French case is not the only one linked to Periscope. Last month in Ohio, a 17-year-old woman was raped by a man with whom she had been drinking and her 18-year-old friend live-streamed the attack on the social media app, prompting a prosecutor to file a rape and kidnapping indictment against the friend. These incidents are prompting new political questions about regulating for how people use these technologies and the responsibility of the companies who host these apps.

Facebook’s Trending Topics Under Scrutiny

Facebook has become a popular news source for many, but recently has come under scrutiny for omitting conservative new stories from the site’s trending list. Facebook released a 28-page document that was sent to employees, detailing how to determine what news stories are the most popular and providing editorial guidelines for the team of editors who oversee the Trending Topics feature. The Associated Press has put together a Q and A on the topic. A discussion of this controversy could lead to a constructive conversation with your kids about analyzing what they read online, checking sources, and a reminder to go beyond the first two or three suggested resources in a Google search to make sure they get more perspectives or viewpoints on any topic.

Voter Data Vulnerable To Hackers

As more and more states are using electronic voting systems in the US, the discovery of data breaches involving voter registration information worldwide is raising the question of whether cybercriminals could manipulate election results. Since the end of 2015, the registration data of millions of voters in the US, Turkey, Mexico and the Philippines has been discovered online. The information included names, addresses, birth dates, party affiliations, phone numbers and emails. Critics say this kind of data exposure could lead to election fraud.

GPS May Be Messing Up Your Mental Road Maps

There is mounting evidence that GPS (Global Positioning System) may be destroying our own cognitive road maps, hindering our ability to remember how to get places, even those we go every day, without GPS guidance. The media is full of evidence to support this case. Around the world people blindly follow the GPS and are led into oceans, streams, off decommissioned bridges and even past Mount Rushmore, which happens to be mismarked in Google maps’ database.

Teenage Zombies Checking Their Phones

For parents of teenagers, this is probably a scene you’ve witnessed before - “Teenage zombies” - heads bowed over phones, checking and refreshing social network apps. A new survey conducted for Common Sense Media finds that that fifty percent of teens feel they are addicted to their mobile devices. Fifty nine percent of parents surveyed thought their kids were addicted to their phones, while twenty seven percent of parents also said they too themselves are hooked.

What can you do to detox? Create rules such as no phones at the dinner table, and hold the entire family accountable. Avoid spending hours surfing the internet, because without setting limits it is easy to get sucked into the digital vortex. Make an attempt to post on social media less, which will lead to less time spent looking at other people's posts. Lastly, resist the urge to check your device every two minutes and take a walk or do something else instead.
