Empty Bowls
Recently, the
Northport High School Art Club, alongside volunteers from the school district and local community, participated in a fundraising event known as Empty Bowls. As participants in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions, which supports students’ charitable activities and donates money to a high school-selected charity, the students commit time and effort to raising money, competing against other schools, and contributing the funds raised.
The art students held a soup dinner fundraiser, benefiting the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry of Northport - East Northport. The organization represents local churches and synagogues and provides food and support for families in need. For the price of a $10 ticket, the dinner guests were served a soup/salad dinner, and selected a one of a kind handmade ceramic bowl from the over 400 bowls that were made by the students for this event. The bowls are taken home as a reminder of all of the empty bowls in the world. Local businesses donated food, school volunteers set up the event and students greeted guests, served food, and kept pots, silverware and beverage containers full. Student Erin McGuire shared, “It was really nice seeing everyone come together for a good cause.”
