Staying Awake For A Good Cause
Recently, the student council from
Bellport High School in Brookhaven organized a “Stay-Awake-A-Thon” in order to raise awareness for HELP Suffolk, a housing facility for homeless families. Various activities were planned throughout the night to help everyone stay awake including, basketball, volleyball and a Twister challenge. As participants in Optimum Community’s Charity Champions, which supports students’ charitable activities and donates money to a high school-selected charity, the students commit time and effort to raising money, competing against other schools, and contributing the funds raised. When asked to share their thoughts about the event, Amanda D. recording secretary of the student council said, “This was a great opportunity for the community to come together for a worthy cause.” Fellow student council member Dan O. commented, “We raised over $3,000 and had a lot of fun doing it!” Ellen Hoffman council advisor added, “I’m very proud of what we were able to accomplish, and I know the seniors are going to do great things in the future.“
