Smiley Faces

Local veterans, volunteer fiefighters, police officers, senior citizens and others received a special thank you for all they do, thanks to the talent, dedication and community spirit of students, staff and parents at Smithtown Elementary School. P.T.A. parents collected over 500 stones for the Smile Stone Project, as a way for the entire school to share their love. Students in grades K-5 painted hearts, American flags, ladybugs, smiley faces, flowers, and sports symbols on the stones, which were donated and packaged in decorative baskets. All the stones had a label on the bottom saying “Sending you a smile from Smithtown Elementary!” Fourth grader, James C. summed up the project, “Painting a stone to give to a veteran from the military makes me feel good because I want them to know that we will never forget what they did for our country!” Thomas N. added, “It made me feel good because we are giving smiles to those who have courage and keep us safe.” Lastly, 5th grader Victoria N. noted, “I loved this because we are giving a smile to someone who may need one and when they see the stone, I hope they will.”
