The Hat Parade

Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School community is always looking for ways to come together, help others, and be kind. Recently, the students and staff hosted the first Spring-time Hat Parade, a fundraiser that benefited the Heavenly Hats Foundation. Established in 2001 by 10-year-old Anthony Leanna, the organization gives new hats to anyone who has lost their hair, due to any medical condition. Acts of kindness were rewarded at home and then brought into school as a donation to this worthy cause. Students and their families also colored in hats that were displayed in the main lobby, some of which included messages to Mrs. Feminella, their principal out on medical leave, and other loved ones to show support. Throughout the week, teachers and families worked with students to create their hats and were joined by all the schools in the district, by sending a donation or attending the parade. When asked about the week long efforts, Commack Road student Carly B. shared, “It was really inspiring, because Mrs. Feminella is sick and we could help lift her spirits by having the parade and raising money for the foundation.” Gabby D. added, “I thought it was awesome and a really good and fun way to raise money and support something important.” Lastly, Jenna H. exclaimed, “I thought it was really nice that we were able to honor people who have cancer.”
