The Lessons of Giving

Students at Central Boulevard Elementary School in Bethpage learn quickly that there is no such thing as being too young when it comes to lending a helping hand, especially on Thoughtful Thursday. Each month, on a designated Thursday, students perform acts of kindness. They have completed many community service projects, benefiting several organizations including: Meals-On-Wheels, local pre-schools and assisted living facilities, and Operation Write Home, and many more. This month, the Thoughtful Thursday activity was creating winter decorations and writing positive warm winter wishes for local senior citizens, bringing cheer and comfort to those who may have difficulty going out in the winter.

The school-wide initiative began three years ago by Sarah Glassman, school social worker, and Patricia Tierney, second grade inclusion teacher have all the students excited about doing for others. When asked about the program, Alex N., kindergartener shared, "It means to me, that I really want to try hard to be nice to people. Sometimes people can be mean to each other but it is much better to try and be nice." Payton M., grade 2 said, “Thoughtful Thursday makes me feel thoughtful and caring for people who need help. I feel excited for the people to get our beautiful Thoughtful Thursday gifts.” Lastly, Jisela T. grade 5 added, "When you do something nice, you get a feeling you can't describe. It feels like joy, kindness, and more mixed into one. It feels absolutely amazing. We should all give it a try."
