Knicks Read to Achieve

Summer Reading Event Held at Brooklyn Public Library's Coney Island Branch in Brooklyn

Optimum Community partnered with Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks to bring a summer reading event to more than 50 local children at the Coney Island Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library with NY Knicks Alumnus John Starks. Mr. Starks spoke to the children about the importance of literacy and reading over the summer. They read aloud from “Salt in His Shoes,” a children’s book by Deloris Jordan. Following the reading, the children took part in an interactive quiz about the book and participated in a raffle and autograph session.

“Many young people find it difficult to read when school is not in season,” said Senator Diane Savino. “Thanks to innovative progams like Knicks Read to Achieve, children become more enthusiastic about reading and benefit tremendously. I commend Optimum Community, the Knicks and Madison Square Garden for a program that truly engages children in such a positive way.”
