High School for World Cultures Students Participate in Charity Champions

Optimum's Power to Learn and Assemblyman Marcus Crespo recognized students at the High School for World Cultures for participating in this year's Charity Champions program during a Students vs. Teachers Volleyball Tournament. The students have chosen to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to helping cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improving the quality of life of patients and their families. All proceeds from the volleyball fundraiser were donated to LLS. Before the start of the tournament, Assemblyman Crespo told the students he was so impressed by their commitment to the charity and offered to throw in a $250 donation of his own if the kids beat the teachers. He spoke about the importance of community service to the crowd of about 150 students and 25 faculty members. Power to Learn then presented a $1000 check to Mara Abeleda from the Campaign Aide of Pennies for Patients, a part of the LLS.

"I applaud the students and faculty who are involved in raising funds for such a worthy cause," said Assemblyman Crespo. "Great strides are being made today with regard to research and cure rates for these particular types of cancer thanks to organizations like The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Programs such as Cablevision’s Charity Champions and the commitment of students are truly helping many people experience a better life."
