Charity Champions Grand Prize Presentation at Monsignor Scanlan High School

Congressman Joseph Crowley joined Optimum’s Power to Learn to recognize students at Monsignor Scanlan High School as the New York City grand-prize winners in this year’s Charity Champions, a program that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity of their choice. Students chose to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Fundraising efforts throughout the year included a “Brooklyn Bridge Give Thanks Walk,” several themed sales and raffles, a Zumbathon and a Movie Night. Despite a three alarm fire that damaged the school in January, students kept their commitment to the charity and continued to have success with their fundraising events, even planning a hot chocolate sale to benefit St. Jude’s when the cafeteria had no heat. Student Advisor Jennifer Tulipano spoke about the scope of the s tudents’ innovative efforts for St. Jude’s throughout the year and Congressman Crowley congratulated students for their dedication and stressed the importance of community service. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital representative Yohanna DeLosSantos attended the ceremony, thanking the students for their commitment and speaking about the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Optimum presented her with the $5,000 check to St. Jude’s.

“Congratulations to all of the students involved in this effort,” said Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx). “Thanks to your motivation and dedication throughout the year, you are the Charity Champions grand-prize winners in New York City. By helping to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, each of you are helping to continue their lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children. I also applaud Cablevision for creating a program that provides young people with a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in other people’s lives.”
