Weehawken Peer Leadership Students Participate in Charity Champions

Peer Leadership students from Weehawken High School were recognized for their participation in this year’s Charity Champions program during a Peer Leadership Club Meeting. Mayor Richard Turner joined the event, in which the students were presented with $500 to further their fundraising efforts and $1000 to be donated to the charity of their choice, The Special Olympics of New Jersey. Mayor Turner thanked the students for their commitment and spoke about the importance of community service. Peer Leadership Advisor Laura Sciortino and students discussed their fundraising efforts and why they selected the Special Olympics of New Jersey, a non-for-profit organization that provides sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of friendship with other athletes and the community. The students have held several fundraisers throughout the year to raise money and awareness for the organization.

“It is evident that these enthusiastic students are determined to make their fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics of New Jersey a huge success,” said Mayor Turner. “I am sure that they will do a terrific job and that this experience will enrich their lives and the lives of special athletes. I’d like to also thank Optimum Community for bringing this program to Weehawken High School.”
