North Shore High School Named Charity Champions Winner
Optimum Community visited North Shore High School during their Relay for Life fundraising event to recognize their volunteer efforts and announce them as the Charity Champions Nassau County Grand Prize Winners. Over 300 students, teachers and community members gathered on the athletic fields at North Shore High School to join in the fight against cancer. This all night walkathon was the culminating fundraising event for the school’s support for the American Cancer Society this school year. Relay for Life teams camped out overnight at the school and took turns walking or running around the track. Events were up to 24 hours long and, because cancer never sleeps, each team was asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times. A survivor lap and caregiver lap kicked off the event, followed by welcoming remarks from School Advisor Christine Halloran who discussed the students’ successful fundraising efforts throughout the year. Some of the efforts included an “Acoustic Café” event that showcased student/faculty/alumni talent, a “Coaches vs. Cancer” event that featured a girls/varsity basketball game, a “Dance Showcase” featuring the school’s Pulse Team, and more. The students were presented with a $5,000 check to be donated to the American Cancer Society during the opening ceremony.
