Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest
Hispanic Heritage Month Prize Presentation in Garden City
Senator Kemp Hannon joined Optimum Community in recognizing two Garden City students for their winning entries in the 2014 Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest. Garden City High School 11th grader Esteban Ortiz was presented with a laptop computer for his 2nd place winning entry for the high school level, while Garden City Middle School 8th grader Erika Rooney was presented with a Kindle Fire for her third place winning entry for the middle school level. Both students were recognized in a ceremony at the high school and included school principals, district superintendent, district language teachers, and family members. Senator Hannon congratulated the students and briefly spoke on the importance of writing.
“I thoroughly enjoyed Esteban’s and Erika’s outstanding essays and congratulate each of them on a job well done,” said Senator Hannon. “This is a terrific accomplishment that makes all of us proud. I also applaud Cablevision for its annual Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest that celebrates the Latino experience and provides students with an opportunity to voice their perspective and talk about their personal experiences in this regard.”
