Charity Champions Grand Prize Presentation at Long Island Lutheran High School

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano joined Cablevision to honor Long Island Lutheran High School for being selected as a grand prize winner of Cablevision’s 2013-14 Charity Champions, a program that promotes volunteerism and encourages area high schools to raise funds for a charity of their choice. The entire LuHi student body, faculty and staff filled the school chapel for the event. A video that highlighted all of the LuHi charitable service activities during the school year was shown and several students spoke about their fundraising efforts and how they are proud to be recognized as winners of Charity Champions. This year, LuHi students rose over $2,200 for LuHi Meal Packing, a school-run charity that partners with Kids Against Hunger to package meals for those in need, both globally and locally. In addition to the money raised, over 300,000 meals were packed during the school’s annual “Meal Packing” event. Executive Mangano congratulated the students, spoke of the importance in giving back, and provided the school with a citation. Cablevision then presented the $5,000 Charity Champions check and plaque to LuHi Principal Denis Scannell. A musical performance by the school band and orchestra concluded the event.

“I congratulate all of the students participating in this initiative for their commitment and hard work throughout the year. Thanks to a successful fundraising campaign, Long Island Lutheran High School is the Nassau County grand-prize winner,” said Nassau County Executive Mangano. “All of these young people are true role models who are helping to ensure that children and families both globally and locally do not go hungry. I would also like to thank Cablevision for its Charity Champions program that engages students in such a positive way.”
