Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest

Ossining Student Awarded Grand Prize in Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest

Town of Ossining Supervisor Sue Donnelly and Village of Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity joined Optimum Community in recognizing Ossining High School senior Nicole Ruiz as the grand prize winner of the 7th annual Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest. Nicole read her prize-winning essay about Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in front of a small group of her teachers, guidance counselor, mother and both elected officials. Supervisor Donnelly congratulated Nicole, and Mayor Gearity presented her with an official pendant typically reserved for dignitaries. She was then presented with her prize of $2500.

“I thoroughly enjoyed Nicole’s prize-winning essay on Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latino Supreme Court Justice. This wonderful accomplishment makes all of us proud,” said Supervisor Donnelly. “Hispanics throughout the years have made contributions to our nation, just as Sonia Sotomayor currently is. Thank you to Optimum Community for this terrific program that helps students better appreciate the Hispanic heritage.”

Mayor Gearity noted, “I thought Nicole picked a wonderful subject for her essay as Sonia Sotomayor’s story is so inspiring. Her essay was both informative and interesting. I also commend Optimum Community for its leadership in creating this essay contest that pays tribute to the generations of Hispanics who have enriched our society.”
