Charity Champions Grand Prize Presentation at Beacon High School
Cablevision’s Power to Learn recognized students at Beacon High School as the Westchester/Hudson Valley Grand Prize Winner of Charity Champions, a program that promotes volunteerism and encourages high school students to raise funds for a charity of their choice. Duchess County Executive Marc Molinaro and Beacon Mayor Randy Casale attended the event where the school was presented with $5,000 to be donated to Mid-Hudson Animal Aid, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping abandoned and abused animals throughout the Hudson Valley. Beacon High School students chose this charity to raise money for this school year after a fire damaged one of their buildings in September 2013. Through a variety of creative fundraising endeavors, the students raised over $1,000 for the organization and collected 205 pounds of cat food. Executive Molinaro and Mayor Casale congratulated the students and discussed the importance of community service. Mid-Hudson Animal Aid president Don Petruncola and student members of SADD were then presented with a $5,000 check. President Petruncola thanked students for their commitment throughout the year to the charity.

“Congratulations to all of the students involved in this terrific initiative,” said County Executive Molinaro. “So many animals are either abused or abandoned and need a helping hand and these young people have provided just that through their innovative fundraising efforts throughout the year. I would also like to thank Cablevision for its Charity Champions program that brings out the best in all of us.”
Mayor Casale noted, “All of the young people here today are an inspiration and thanks to their successful fundraising campaign they are the Westchester/Hudson Valley grand champions. It’s through programs such as this that students realize that they can be a positive force in their community. I’d also like to thank Cablevision for making this program available to our young people.”
