Veteran's Day

Torrington Middle School Students Recognize Local Veterans

Students at Torrington Middle School participated in an Optimum Community event that helped students better appreciate the many sacrifices made by the members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The event began with student performances of the Presentation of the Colors, National Anthem and Taps. State Senator Clark Chapin, State Representative Jay Case and State Representative Michelle Cook all attended and spoke to the students about the importance of honoring our nation’s veterans. The event included veterans Mike Mich, Felix Minelli and Dan Thurston from the Torrington VFW, who spoke about the mission of the VFW and took part in a Q&A with students and teachers. The program closed with the presentation of a $1500 check to the Torrington VFW and a check in the same amount to Torrington Middle School in support of its veteran recognition programs.

“Events like the one today are so important as they provide an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the many privileges we enjoy each and every day thanks to the sacrifices made by veterans throughout the years,” said State Senator Chapin. “It is very easy to become complacent and forget the many hardships that veterans and their families have endured on our behalf. I commend Optimum Community for bringing this event to our school.”

“The men and women we honor today are true heroes in every sense,” said State Representative Case. “Thanks to today’s event from Optimum Community our young people are able to learn more about the experiences of veterans from all walks of life and better appreciate the many contributions they have made.”

State Representative Cook said, “I’d like to thank the students and the veterans participating in today’s event from Optimum Community. Clearly, our veterans have made the world a better place for each of us and are deserving of our recognition. They have sacrificed and many have put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. They are deserving of our lasting gratitude.”
